Thailand Adventure and Travel Advice Part 2

Two years ago I went backpacking around Thailand with my buddy Jake. Thailand is a beautiful country with luscious jungles, sandy beaches, amazing food and very happy, friendly people. Going travelling after I graduated was one of the best decisions I've ever made!

You can see part one of this post and a list of things to do here

Thailand Travel Advice

Things to do

  •  Don't be scared to eat street food. It can often be more hygienic than eating from a restaurant because it is cooked straight in front of you rather than reheated. Also, it's super cheap! You can expect to buy a nice street cooked meal for about 60 - 100 baht which works out at less than £2.

  • Use Tuk Tuks to get around as they are super fun. Although please be aware that whatever the driver tells you for the price you can pretty much half it, especially in Bangkok where they love to rip off clueless tourists.

  • Get a Massage. Thailand is known for it's Thai Massage so you should definitely give it a go. Be warned though it can feel a little like being tortured to relaxing music - in a good way!

  • Do some Island hopping. We visited four main islands and lots of little ones. It's a great way to see more of the country and to scout out the best beaches. My favourite beach was Railay beach. It was absolutely gorgeous and the water so calm.

  • Rent a scooter. Renting a scooter allowed us to explore all of the different islands we stayed at in our own time. Lazing on the beach and drinking cocktails is great, but it can get a little boring after a couple of hours. When we went exploring on a scooter we found a secluded beach, an amazing waterfall, and a half built abandoned house in the hills which overlooked the whole of Koh Phangan.

Some Travel Advice

  • Take probiotics for about a month before you go. The food there is exposed to different germs that your body won't be used to and taking probiotics will toughen up your stomach and lessen the chances of you catching some stomach bug.

  • Buy a travel guide. I recommend Lonely Planet. Our guide book helped us out so much along the way, from maps to food and hotel recommendations. We read a little about each place we went to before we got there. It was especially helpful when it pre-warned us about the packs of wild dogs that roam the streets of Ayutthaya (scary!).

  • Pack a rain poncho if you are going in the monsoon season as you can see from the picture above it can rain pretty heavy (don't worry thought the rain is super warm).

Thailand Travel Advice

  •  Pack lots of insect repellent with at least 50% deet. The weaker stuff doesn't do much.

  •  Go with the flow - Don't book all your destinations before hand. As soon as me and Jake got to Bangkok we went into a government travel agency and booked all of our hotels and travel arrangements. Whilst this did make our life easier, we also missed out on travelling with the people that we met along at the way. If I was doing it again I would only book the first city or island that you go to and then just see what happens.

  • Take a sun hat. I forgot to pack one and therefore had to walk around with a scarf around my head for a day. It wasn't my most fashionable moment...

Below are just a few photos that we took, if you're considering going there, hopefully my pictures will convince to just book those flights. Trust me, you won't regret it!

Have you got any travel adventures booked for 2016? I'd love to hear all about them!
